Getting started with Tezos NFTs

If you’re totally new to NFTs you’ll probably want to start with an NFT 101. Check out and then come back here 😊

If you’re an NFT artist on another blockchain and looking to get started on Tezos this is for you!

Also, I won’t be going over cryptonomics here, just coming at it as an artist.

What is Tezos?
According to Wikipedia, “Tezos is a decentralized open-source blockchain that can execute peer-to-peer transactions and serve as a platform for deploying smart contracts. The native cryptocurrency for the Tezos blockchain is the tez which has the symbol XTZ.”

So tl;dr a different blockchain.

How is it different than ethereum or Bitcoin?
It’s been dubbed eco-friendly and people call them #cleanNFTs because it is a proof-of-work blockchain vs proof-of-stake (eth, btc, etc.) Basically it requires much less energy to transact on the blockchain.

According to an article from TechCrunch in March, 2021, “Each Ethereum transaction requires nearly as much energy as two American households use per day”.

That means to mint and sell one NFT it takes as much energy as two households in the US. 😱 Read more about that here.

How much does it cost to mint and list NFTs on Tezos?
Basically they are very little, like pennies. I’ve been working as its about a 1/4th of a single penny.

tl;dr you can transact cheaply

Can I use my MetaMask for Tezos NFTs?
Not at this time. To mint and buy Tezos NFTs you’ll need a wallet like Kukai or Temple. I personally use Kukai so recommend that. I started with Temple but kept having a lot of issues.

I have a Tezos wallet, what do I do now?
Pick your first marketplace. There are several to choose from and the Tezos NFT community is pretty much across all of them.

objkt.com
This is the largest NFT marketplace on Tezos. You can buy and sell your NFTs on their marketplace and even do an English or a Dutch Auction.

You’ll need to create a custom contract or collection in order to mint on here. You’ll pay this fee once and then fees after will be normal network transactions fees.

I’ve been minting on here since the whole hen debacle (for another time) and enjoying it

kalamint.io
To be honest, I’ve only minted 3 on there and because of that don’t have a real sense of the activity.

versum.xyz
Versum is the latest to the Tezos scene and it gives me early hen vibes. Not so much the site but the community’s excitement around it, but the front page does remind me of hen. Although, the UI is much more clean and it has all the features you always wanted in hen.

I’ve minted about 5 pieces there right now and enjoying it.

How can I edit my profile on Tezos?
Go to https://tzprofiles.com/ and follow the instructions from there.
